Holy Fucking Hell.

Just saw this ten minutes ago on CNN. Massive crowds building right now in NY and in front of the White House. Clearly a euphoric moment (if no counter-attacks occur). The question is: what will this do for Obama's presidency/ re-election?

I've been following the unrest in the Middle East ever since Tunisia's dictator got toppled. It's been an amazing ride so far. Ben Wedeman (CNN's top correspondent in the area) is having the time of his life. It's been about five days since the quake, and there's a general consensus that the people being carted out of the rubble aren't likely going to be alive. Thus, the worry shifts from trying to save those almost dead...to trying to keep those alive still alive.

 Apparently, much of my initial impressions on the situation in China, and thus what I told Cytosis, were wrong. The epicenter was not in Chongqin but in Wenchuan, and though the effects of the quake were rather dire, it wasn't the catastrophe that I had thought. Yesterday a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck China. The epicenter is in Chongqin, China (Edit: Incorrect) but effects of the quake reached out-of-country as far as Vietnam. About 5,000 people are currently pronounced dead, many more are trapped, and the numbers for injured are not given. All death toll and related statistics are expected ( Read more... )
